People of Fashion: Wendy Tapia
Here at the NUFS we love to get in touch with fashionistas from all over the world. This time we talked to style guru Wendy Tapia to bring some of her fashion sense into our blog.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Wendy Tapia, I am from San Diego, California. I am a student and study psychology. The most common question I get asked is how I balance fashion and psychology? My response always is that I like to incorporate my knowledge of psych with fashion and influence young individuals to “just be yourself”. I’d like to think of myself as an influencer for other young souls who are struggling with the way society loves to judge one another and to simply learn how to love yourself.
How would you describe your style?
Right now, I am absolutely obsessed with vintage outfits. I am not an expert obviously since I didn’t grow up in the 70’s… BUT I am not trying to break down high waisted bell bottom jeans into an equation as to why they are so cute. All I know is that I love the look, I love how it looks on me, and it makes me happy. Even though I am always finding to scour through vintage flea markets, I still love to shop at places for current looks and trends. I mean regardless of what era the clothes are from or inspired by, if it looks good and makes me feel good, then that is all that matters.
Where do you draw your inspiration?
I draw inspiration from both vintage and modern looks. My outfits sometimes are a combination of several decades (40’s-80’s) and modern garments or accessories.
What is your favourite part when styling an outfit?
I’d like to say my favourite part is finishing my OOTD with a neck scarf! Neck scarfs are so vintage, which I like to say they are my signature in every outfit.
What is your biggest Fashion pet peeve?
My fashion pet peeve is trends that only fit one “body type”, usually Instagram/ model body types.
What is the most outrageous thing you’ve worn?
The most outrages outfit I’ve ever worn was when I wanted to copy an Insta style look from I believe H&M. It was a body con dress, with ankle boots, and a jean jacket. The picture looked amazing, and I fell in love with the colours, which it made me run to the mall and buy the exact outfit. The moment I arrived home I put the outfit together and I looked horrible. The main reason I disagreed with the entire look was because I don’t usually wear body con dresses, I didn’t feel like myself.
Name a fashion rule that every woman should break.
Every fashion rule should be broken! Who is society to tell us what to wear anyway? If you want to wear something, then DO IT! It is your body and you should style it however you please. People are either going to love it or hate it, but if you feel comfortable who cares!
What would you say is killing fashion these days?
Fashion rules… are killing fashion! Fashion is not always couture, and high fashion, no fashionista can tell us what to wear and when to wear it! If it mid-august and I feel like wearing a huge jacket because it's cold, I am most likely going to wear it.
What do you expect from fashion in the future?
Although most brands are slowly incorporating all body types into their fashion lines, I’d like to see gender equality in the fashion industry that allows both female and male, but also transgender to express themselves through fashion.
Anything you would like our readers to know?
Keep your style true to yourself! Don’t try to style yourself on new trends if they don’t fit your personality. If you are happy and you like what you are wearing or doing, then do it! Don’t regret, but always embrace your confidence.
