Sewing Revelations
Here at the Fashion Society, we have been busy! We have had so many developments over the last few months that will assist or members. It’s amazing how we have many people to aid us over the months in our time of need. Our sewing classes are really picking up speed thanks to some crucial companies.
Sew Essential
One of our biggest supports our society has gained is the company Sew Essential; an online sewing superstore. They generously sent us 11 rolls of fantastic fabric. Feels like we’re a kid in a candy store! Our members minds have been in overdrive thinking on how we can utilise these fantastic fabrics. Calico, muslin, taffeta, polycotton- they gave us a fantastic selection to really get started in the making process.
When you want to make a new outfit, it is good to start at step 1. Don’t rush into it! Make a mock up called a toile. It feels like we are making dozens for our September collection. It’s important to use a weight of fabric similar to the piece of clothing you are making. The high-quality calico sent to us from Sew Essential is a fantastic mock for suit trousers. It handles well with iron work and it was easy to straighten the grain.
Adjustoform
Draping is also a fantastic process to design and create a garment. Here you can see Nurul using a mi of calico and muslin to recreate the effect of the different fabrics in the final garment. We were provided with top of the range dress forms by Adjustoform which are fully adjustable! This allows us to produce accurate garments for the client effortlessly.
Singer
In the toile stages, our Singer 1507 machines sent to us by Singer themselves. These spritely little machines are great for fast seams and basic stitches. You can see how well they stitched our calico while draping.
Janome
The bulk and heart of our machine work force are our different Janome machines have really packed a punch when sewing our thicker fabrics. The 525s is a well-crafted all-rounder that can handle anything you throw at it. Its robust and has a fantastic selection of essential stitches and a 1 step button hole. Great! We also have the Memory Craft 350E- a home embroidery machine. We have been able to make our own patched to put on our finished garment. Not many machines on the market can do this at that price so were happy (for now at least)! Now we just need get our brains to work in overdrive some more!
